60 minutes at it again? You be the judge.

Sallie Mae's headquearters is just down the street from where we live and even closer to where I work, so when a coworker brought this story to my attention, I was naturally interested.  The link to the online story is here and Sallie Mae's response is here.

I haven't read the article in print, but I did listen to the podcast, it is available through iTunes.

Aside from the actual comentary in the stories, I find the lack of personal responsibility disturbing.  People need to understand that when you borrow money for anything you are bound by the terms of the agreement that you signed.  Just because our culture says that you should have a college education, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is free.  SOMEONE has to pay for it.  My analogy for this is trying to tell my wife that I went an baught a Fararri and now I can't pay for it.  At that point I have 2 choices, sell the Fararri or get a job.

I heard a British speaker at Wheaton a couple years ago who was heavily involved in world politics and was a prominent Christian leader with the Anglican church. He was a very interesting man involved in conflict resolution on a global and political scale. He mentioned that he never watches American news because it rarely gives adequate information about what is really going on in the world. I think he was on to something. News media in America is frequently very tainted. My brother Brian works for Sallie Mae and also had some interesting insight on how incorrect many of the "facts" were on the 60 Minutes special. I'm with you Chuck! People need to wake up and smell the greenbacks! You take out a loan, you have to pay it back according to the contract you sign! It's called being a responsible adult. Of course there are extenuating circumstances in some cases, but from what I've read Sallie Mae has a record of being merciful to the extent that the law allows them to be merciful. I don't really know the details of these people's stories, but one of the guys had only paid one full and on time payment in 162 months! Thanks for the interesting articles Chuck! Lord, grant that I will be a responsible steward of Your blessings!
